Cornea (2012)

SYNOPSIS

Thomas wurde vor einem Jahr von seiner Frau Els verlassen. Nach außen hin scheint sich der 38-Jährige mit der Trennung abgefunden zu haben, die Wahrheit sieht allerdings anders aus: Morgens, wenn Els das ehemals gemeinsame Haus verlassen hat, tritt Thomas heimlich ein, duscht, raucht im Garten eine Zigarette und gießt die Pflanzen. Er saugt die Erinnerung an sein altes Leben auf wie ein Süchtiger. Doch als er sich am Tod von Els' neuem Lebensgefährten schuldig macht und sich seine ahnungslose Ex-Frau hilfesuchend an ihn wendet, bricht Thomas' prekäres Arrangement zusammen. Immer tiefer verliert er sich in einem Netz aus Lügen und Schuldgefühlen. Cornea ist ein dichtes und intensiv erzähltes Psychodrama.

It is a year since Thomas (38) has been left by his wife Els (37). She continues to live in their home and sleep in the bed they shared for 14 years. It seems like Thomas quickly gets used to the new situation with his new home and current girlfriend; in fact he cannot cope at all. But then he finds a way to deal with it. Every morning before going to work, he parks his car in front of their old home. Once Els is on her way to work, he opens the door with a spare key and calmly takes a shower, smokes a cigarette or waters the plants. Then he cleans everything and leaves for his job taking medical photographs of eyes at the local hospital.

The nicely structured life of Thomas starts showing some cracks when Thomas meets Els’s new lover, a gym teacher 10 years younger. With the same compulsion Thomas continues his voyeuristic behaviour; following Els as well as the life of her new boyfriend. Circumstances result in a tragic accident, where Thomas doesn’t lend the hand that might have saved the young gym teacher. However, no one is aware of the fact Thomas was present right at this fateful moment. The young man gets in a coma and dies a few months later. And Thomas was responsible for his death. Meanwhile, Els is growing closer to Thomas, who offers a shoulder to cry on, and life goes back to the way it was a year before. But Thomas’s new life is built on appearances, and appearances are deceptive…
